Can Kids Use Mouthwash?

July 31, 2021 9:25 pm

Mouthwash can be a great addition to an at-home oral hygiene routine for adults. However, when it comes to kids using mouthwash, there are many things to consider, such as age and type of mouthwash. Keep reading to learn more about mouthwash usage for kids!

At What Age Can Kids Use Mouthwash?

In general, it’s recommended to not let your child use mouthwash. Kids under the age of six run a higher risk of swallowing the mouthwash when using it. Ages twelve and up is the most ideal timeline for kids to start integrating mouthwash into their oral hygiene routine.

It’s important to note that many mouthwashes contain fluoride. In appropriately small quantities found in toothpaste and tap water, fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and boost oral health. However, if a child swallows too much mouthwash, they run the risk of getting fluorosis, a cosmetic condition that occurs from excessive consumption of fluoride. Fluorosis can cause severe and permanent tooth discoloration.

Alcohol mouthwashes are also unsafe if swallowed. Even if you buy alcohol-free mouthwash, it’s best to keep it out of reach of any children and to closely supervise your child if their dentist has recommended they use it.

Strong Brushing & Flossing Habits

The best way to keep your child’s teeth healthy and strong is to promote good brushing and flossing habits. If children keep up with their daily teeth cleaning, they likely won’t even need mouthwash to maintain great oral health. If you’d like to incorporate mouthwash into your child’s teeth cleaning routine, we recommend speaking with their dentist to determine if it’s right for them.
