Addressing Dental Emergencies for Kids
August 26, 2021 3:12 amWhile dental emergencies aren’t fun to think about, you should prepare for one in case it happens to your child! Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry offers emergency dental care so you can have peace of mind knowing your child can be taken care of in a timely fashion if they experience a dental emergency. But how do you know what constitutes a dental emergency?
Here are some examples of situations that would be considered an emergency:
- Knocked out teeth from accidents or playing sports
- Chipped, broken, or cracked teeth
- Oral bleeding and swelling
- Lost or broken dental restoration
- Severe mouth pain
- Foreign objects stuck in between teeth
What to Do for a Dental Emergency
The first thing to do is remain calm! Panicking will only make the situation more stressful. If your child has knocked out a tooth, preserve the knocked-out tooth in a glass of milk until you get to our office ASAP so we can reattach the tooth! If your child is experiencing bleeding, use gauze if you have it handy to help control and potentially stop the intensity of the blood flow. For swollen or sore cheeks, ice their cheeks using an ice pack or frozen vegetables. If your child has a sharp object lodged between their teeth, don’t try to pry it out yourself; let us take a look.
How to Prevent a Dental Emergency
Sometimes it’s impossible to prevent a dental emergency. But there are ways you can reduce their risk of certain dental emergencies. For example, help your child maintain a healthy diet that supports strong teeth and gums; encourage them to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes each time and to floss every day; schedule twice yearly professional dental cleanings and checkups at Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics; and if your child plays contact sports, make sure they wear a mouth guard to prevent any damage to their smile.
