Should Teens See a Pediatric Dentist?
October 29, 2020 8:58 pmIt probably feels like just yesterday when you took your child to the dentist for the very first time. Now your little one might not be so little anymore, and you may be wondering when it’s time for them to transition from a pediatric dentist to a general dentist.
At Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry, we never like to say goodbye to our beloved patients but we know this is an important decision for families as their children grow up. In this blog post, we discuss if teens should still see a pediatric dentist!
When Do Teens Stop Seeing a Pediatric Dentist?
When you decide to go from a pediatric dentist to a general or family dentist depends on you and your child. Generally speaking, many children make the switch when they turn 18 years old or when they start college.
Benefits of Seeing a Pediatric Dentist
Some parents and teens worry that 16 or 17 years old is “too old” to still be seeing a pediatric dentist, but there are a number of different benefits to this. For one, even if they’re not “little” anymore, teenagers are still experiencing growth changes in their face and jaw. Pediatric dentists are well-versed in how to handle these changes and the other unique oral health challenges of the teenage years, like braces or bad breath.
On top of that, sticking with a pediatric dentist for as long as possible means that your child is getting care from someone who knows their dental history inside and out. Not only does this knowledge help with treatment planning, but it also means that your child will be seen by someone they’re already comfortable with. They won’t have to adjust to a new doctor or a new office just yet, which can be intimidating even for teenagers, let alone some full-grown adults!
Our team invites children of all ages, including teenagers, to visit us here at Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry. Our goal is to help each child and teenager to feel comfortable and confident both while they are in our office and with their smile after their appointment!
