Should My Child Use an Electric Toothbrush?

June 27, 2018 2:15 pm

We understand that getting your child to brush their teeth can be frustrating. You may have tried nearly everything to interest them in oral care. If you’re at your wits’ end, an electric toothbrush may be just the thing to get your kiddo more enthusiastic about brushing their teeth!

Should My Child Use an Electric Brush?

While the American Dental Association states that both electric and manual toothbrushes can be equally effective at fighting gum disease and removing plaque, children who are reluctant to brush their teeth or who have difficulty with a manual toothbrush may benefit from an electric toothbrush that does most of the work for them. There are a lot of electric toothbrushes out there for kids that light up, are bright colors, and feature their favorite cartoon character on them. Some even pair up with interactive apps that are both informational and engaging. Using a fun toothbrush can help make brushing more enjoyable, for kids and adults alike!

Which Electric Toothbrush Should I Buy?

Like with manual toothbrushes, there are electric toothbrushes specifically designed for your child. When you’re shopping for electric toothbrushes at the drugstore, grocery store, or online, choose a toothbrush with a child-sized head so that it fits in your child’s mouth and can reach to the back of their teeth comfortably. For toddlers and other younger children whose teeth are still erupting, pick an electric toothbrush with extra soft bristles that are gentler on gums. After you decide which features you want, get your child involved in the exciting part of picking the toothbrush’s design. A brush with their favorite movie, book, or television character on it may help your child actually look forward to brushing their teeth. If you’re still unsure of which electric toothbrush is best for your child, ask our dental team for recommendations!

How Should My Child Brush Their Teeth?

Concerning both manual and electric toothbrushes, proper technique is paramount to superb oral health. Though an electric toothbrush does the work of rotating its bristles, it can’t do all the work on its own! Show your child how to place the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward their gum line and how to gently move the brush back and forth in circular motions against their teeth and gums for two minutes. Maintenance of an electric toothbrush is pretty similar to how you’d care for a manual toothbrush but is still important to teach your child. Have them rinse the brush head well after each use and then store the toothbrush upright on its charging station. Make sure you replace your child’s brush head every three months and after your child has been sick.
