Why Does My Child Have Bleeding Gums?

June 26, 2021 6:17 pm

Just like with adults, if a child’s gums are bleeding that could be the sign of a dental condition that needs addressing. Don’t panic though! While bleeding gums require attention, there are treatment options available depending on the cause. Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry in Kerrville will be there every step of the way until the problem is solved. These are some of the most common causes of bleeding gums in children.

Gum Disease

Gum disease, which starts as gingivitis and develops into periodontitis, is one of the most common culprits behind bleeding gums. This holds true in adults as well. The bleeding is a symptom of plaque build up on the gums, which causes irritation and inflammation. Depending on how severe the gum disease is, this could be fixed with a better brushing routine or more regular trips to the dentist.

Medical Conditions & Medication

Certain medical conditions and medications are known to cause gums to bleed. For instance, medications that are designed to thin blood can reduce blood’s ability to clot and therefore result in gum bleeding. Before you change anything regarding your child’s medication, it’s best to speak to a trained medical professional to discuss your concerns.

Brushing & Flossing

Aggressive brushing or brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush can cause the gums to bleed. If your child is old enough to brush their own teeth, you may want to check how they’re doing it and make sure they’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush. If it has been a while since your child flossed their teeth, then it’s possible there will be some bleeding in the beginning. This should go away as the gums get stronger and healthier.
