Are pediatric dentists qualified to care for patients with special needs?
Pediatric dentists are uniquely qualified to care for children with special needs. Upon graduating from dental school, dentists must complete two to three additional years of training if they want to become pediatric dentists. It’s during this portion of their education that pediatric dentists learn how to care for patients with special needs specifically. In fact, many adults with special needs will visit pediatric dentists because of their expertise. To learn more about how we serve patients with special needs, we recommend contacting our office.

How can I help my child practice good oral hygiene at home?
Every child is different, and what works for some kids may not work at all for others. If you have a specific concern, our team can work with you to come up with a few solutions that you can try. In general, we tell families to try to make dental care seem as fun as possible for their kids to encourage healthy habits. Putting on a fun song to signal that it’s time to brush their teeth can help. You can also try telling your child that there are “sugar monsters” on their teeth, and the only way to fight them off is by brushing and flossing regularly.

How can I help my child feel more comfortable at the dentist?
If you have any questions or concerns for our team, please feel free to let us know so we can assist your family to the best of our abilities. We would be happy to work with you and your child to help them feel more comfortable in our office. You are welcome to take a tour of our practice with them, and our team can explain our procedures to your child in an age-appropriate way so that they always feel informed. Bringing a favorite toy for comfort is a good idea too, and our office also offers TVs and blankets that can help them feel calm and distract them.
